Remaindered part 2

September 26, 2007 - 1:49pm

First, thank you for your kind comments and emails regarding Monday's post.

Well, there was a knock at my door yesterday. FedEx had 27 cases of books for me. I hadn't really considered how many boxes it would take to ship 1300 books. Nor had I counted on the freight cost. You know you're in trouble when they stop calling it "shipping" and start calling it "freight". I'll just say this: the freight was considerably more than the books.

So there they were, stacked in front of our couch. 27 boxes of RealLivePreacher.com. I opened one of the boxes and looked inside. Nothing but covers all the way to the bottom. As it turns out, 1300 is a LOT of books. I'll never sell them all. These things are going to be sitting around with me until the day I die. One has to laugh.

I went ahead and built a chair for myself out of the boxes, thinking that might be a nice way to store them. Lillian came home from school and was delighted with the idea. We decided that we're ready for the Spurs season to begin. And considering it is the NBA, isn't that in a week or two?

click for larger image

Jeanene was somewhat less enthusiastic about the chair. And it wasn't very comfortable anyway. The point is - My "Remaindered Book Lazy-Boy" no longer exists except in my memories.

So here's what I'm going to do. I'll just sell them myself on this website. I'll have to sell about 70 to break even. One of these days I'll probably pass that mark. I'm in no hurry. As long as I am actively writing and blogging, I bet one or two will sell now and then.

And yes, just as I said Monday, I'm going to have fun with this. Every sale will be a cause for celebration. They will all be treated like a wonderful surprise. Notes stuffed into the pages, secret flowers pressed between the leaves. Who KNOWS what I might do to these books. So if you buy one, make sure you check it front to back. Something will be in there.

I'm working on a mechanism for purchasing them. They were $14 originally. I'm thinking I'll sell them for $11 until I've paid for the books and the shipping (Excuse me, FREIGHT!). Then I'll drop the price a little more. I should have something up and running by the weekend if not before.

I'm currently reading the book in the evenings, carving away time after my kids fall asleep. My side-table has RLP , a reading lamp, and an alarm clock.

Warning to all you tough guys out there:

Gordon made me tear up no less than three times last night.. So unless you're confident in your manhood, steer clear!

It's a book about beauty, wonder, pain, epiphany, and the occasional tamal, sin chile por supuesto.

Dude, I'm in!

Didn't know why I'd been putting off buying a copy, but I guess I have my answer now!

As soon as you get it up and running, I'd like to buy one. When my husband and I got married last June, we gave the book to the officiant as a thank you, and lamented the fact that we didn't get one for ourselves.

Cool, count me in for buying least one book. Any chance of getting an autographed copy?

Submitted by rlp on September 26, 2007 - 6:35pm.

sure man, I'll sign all of them probably. Why not?

I was so uncomfortable about the signing thing at first, but now I see it as just a nice way of making the book personal.

And more valuable for resale.

Especially if they're made out to celebrities.

So you may want to sign a few "To Jerry Falwell, with great memories of the Castro, love Pooky."

I'm in for at least two copies. Can't wait for it to be available.

Submitted by Anonymous User on September 26, 2007 - 4:51pm.

Maybe you can use the boxes and make "pews" at your church! Would love to have a copy as well.

Submitted by Alan on September 26, 2007 - 5:05pm.

Awesome, overwhelming and humbling all at once. I already have a copy which I cherish, but when you figure out what the price tag will be I will order SEVERAL copies to pass along to others.

Me thinkest you'll be getting to the 70 book mark quicker than you anticipate. I'll watch for your sale.

I missed the party when your book originally came out, so I'd love to order a copy when you figure out the logistics. Would you deign to ship to a certified Celtics fan?

Heh, the chair is absolutely great. Heck, I bet you could even prop your laptop atop your lap in that position and call it a "workstation". I even smell a tax deduction in there somewhere.

Making my list of second-round book recipients as we speak -- plus a few extras to have on hand for a few years from now when you really truly are all sold out and I have even more new friends. So far the count stands at five.

Submitted by Anonymous User on September 26, 2007 - 7:48pm.

Yippee!!! I'm in for at least three copies. They're going fast now, aren't they?

Submitted by Anonymous User on September 26, 2007 - 10:14pm.

I have to sneak by my husband the thousands of books I purchase... (like the 10 seventy pound boxes this week...) I buy used and remaindered things to sell on the River and the Bay. (AMZ and EBY). I'll buy a few when you are willing to sell cheap... I would love to give them away as presents.

Hey rlp.
talking issues of "freight" vs "postage" - those of us book lovers, who live in arguably the most remote (isolated) city in the world - Perth, Western Australia, are used to seeing shipping bills worth more than the books we order ;-)

Until you get the purchasing details in order, there will be one reserved space in our little faith community library for a copy of your book of essays.

Thank you for staying the course, the ripples from the bow of your little dinghy of faith, woundedness and healing are felt on the other side of the world.

yes. There will be information about that on the purchase page.

Submitted by Anonymous User on September 27, 2007 - 1:42am.

I'll be buying at least 3 - so I think you've got.... (tries to count quickly and gives up) LOTS ordered on this website. It's always so much nicer to give money direct to the author.

I think I'll have to get a few. Could be a nice gift for people in my wedding party next year, and I need a copy for myself.

I will buy one for me and one for my mom. If you have this up soon, I will buy them as Christmas gifts for friends.

Wow, another one that has been remaindered. I got that last year. I bought 100 copies or so and kept them for posterity. I like the idea of giving them out though.

I ordered a copy from Viva Bookstore in San Antonio not a week before you posted. The order is "being processed."
I would like at least three (3) - let's see if you can get me one here in Alabama before Viva does....I imagine you can.
After you make your money back, I will be back for more - they are great gifts!

Moving to Austin soon - looking forward to popping in one Sunday. Hope to bring some good sweet tea and properly cooked grits to Texas.

I will buy 5 - that is if shipping isn't too much to Canada! I've already bought at least that many (sorry - from Amazon) beacuse I keep giving mine away, people like it so much. Maybe I'll even get more than that.... let me think. How much is a case?

Submitted by rlp on September 28, 2007 - 9:28am.

Uh, hadn't even thought about it. Send me an email if you are serious about this.

I sent you an email but it must have gotten lost somewhere. I am interested in perhaps buying a case. How many are in a case and can you check what the shipping might be to Canada?

Thanks, Trish

I really must find a bank! I've been living here for two weeks now and I still haven't made the time to find a branch of my bank. You can be sure the first thing I do when I find one is apply for a debit card so I can buy a copy though!

Do remember that when you start shipping them out the Postal Service has a "book rate." It's a little slower but alot cheaper.

Why the heck did Eerdman's use FedEx? I can understand their hurry to free up space, but using the fastest, most expensive shipping method gives one pause to think about their other business practices.

I'm glad you at least got a picture before J got home, cuz I was
pretty certain of her reaction :)

Submitted by rlp on September 28, 2007 - 2:38pm.

My guess is that they just use FedEx and don't think about it. They have a warehouse and stuff comes in and out of there all the time. Cost of doing business. Maybe you have to drive to the post office to use the US postal service. Anyway, they didn't ask me. $400 is how much it cost.

The GOOD news is, being a book company, they are used to people taking a long time to pay. So I can wait to pay the invoice until I sell some copies. And it looks like I might!

Submitted by Anonymous User on September 28, 2007 - 9:45am.

P.S.

Besides the copies we bought we were given a signed copy originally, along with various other remarks there is the notation, "This book is from the author's copies provided by Eerdmann's 1 of 20"

I'm not sure now that you the author's copies total a gazillion if that makes the resale value higher or lower :)

Not that we'd sell it.

.....well...probably not :)

When I hear "Freight" I think of something that had to be shrink-wrapped or zip-tied onto a pallet. With that many boxes, I wouldn't be surprised if they did. Did you get a forklift to your door? Because how cool would THAT be?

Maybe I'll buy a couple and slip 'em into our church's library. SOMETHING'S gotta balance out the copies of Left Behind. ;)

Looking forward to being able to order book(s). Last fall, I was in the group who ordered books from another favorite blogger - Julie Zickefoos (Letters from Eden), short description is that she is a birder/naturalist/writer (which doesn't begin to describe her). Anyway, I include her name here as an introduction to you - she did the personalized inscription, sending books herself. You may want to check with her regarding logistics and hints on how to do this. You would also like each others writing- an earlier post this week was about the difficulty of balancing life in the family and world while trying to keep time for creative activities.

I'm in! I meant to get them first time round, but postage to the UK is always so expensive. SO depending on the P&P, I'll have at least 3! Christmas is coming.... And clergy colleagues would love these...,

I too am interested in a case. ( How many in a case?) I'm from Canada as well. I can't wait to give copies as Christmas gifts.

I am thrilled your books have come home where they belong. We will all buy them because we know we will love the writing and that all the money we pay will go just to you. I feel very good about that. This will be my Christmas gift to my friends who love your kind of writing. I'll be looking for the chance to order soon.

Congratulations on getting a book published at all. Keep going. You're a fabulous writer and you're blog has lifted me up often this past year which has- all in all- sucked!! Keep writing RLP.

It would quite funny if you "sell out" this shipment with one blog post.

You might even FedEx off a tally sheet to Eerdmann's...with a note reading, "I've stumble across something incredible. I think I'm going to call it "promotion" or "advertising!"

You'd have to send whatever you wrote in a BIG BOX stuffed with annoying Styrofoam peanuts and other evil packing crap....by FREIGHT of course.

Yeah, yeah...I know...it wouldn't be nice.

But it would be funny.

Hey RLP:

You might want to check out cartfly.com if you are looking for a easy way to get a shopping cart up and going on your site. One of the photography blogs I follow recently set it up to sell their calendar. Looks straightforward and pretty basic, but that would seem to be well suited to this task. When you get a cart up, count me in for a book.

I've been "lurking" for years; a devoted reader, but never gutsy enough to join in. It's the least I can do now to buy your book...if for no other reason than to share it with my wife, who's less of a 'net addict than I! Thanks for all the inspiration for this doubting Christian. I look forward to keeping up with you!

The book is lovely, life affirming and makes me hot eyed and hopeful at the same time when I read it. It's great that the books you sent out as orphans in the storm are coming back to you with their own stories to tell. I'd like more copies of the book if you can freight/ship them to the UK. Do I press the button at the top of the page?

Thanks for keeping it real.
